Young Professionals: Medicine
Ages 13 – 18
The medicine stream of Young Professionals is an English language programme delivered in the context of a medicine career. The course aims to prepare students for a future career in medicine and create a sustained interest in further study of science. Using a combination of classroom tuition and practical laboratory work, students explore topics such as infectious diseases, enzyme functions, cell structure, DNA replication and pharmacology.
Through practical lessons and projects, such as heart dissection and extracting the DNA of a strawberry, students develop an aptitude for medical skills such as precision, objectivity, integrity and initiative. Students also enjoy medical-focused day trips, such as a visit to The Royal Institute in London to analyse DNA with a team from L’Oréal, or a trip to The Old Operating Theatre Museum to experience how operations took place 300 years ago.
Ideal for students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or a related field such as pharmacy, as well as those with a general interest in medicine and medical biology. In maximum classes of 11, students receive a combination of classroom theory-based teaching, as well as practical sessions. Each week, students go on a ‘Study-in-Action’ excursion, to a destination related to their chosen career.
Weekly projects also aim to improve a student’s English language capability through team-work, public speaking and debate.
