Young Professionals: Engineering

Ages 13 – 18

The Engineering stream of Young Professionals is an English language programme delivered in the context of an engineering career. Through a combination of theory-based teaching and practical workshops, students explore different branches of engineering, including mechanical, electronic and civil engineering.

Through projects such as making mini hydraulic bridges or building battery-powered vehicles, students grow confidence in solving practical engineering problems whilst simultaneously improving their English language . Students also enjoy engineering-focused day trips, such as touring the world-famous Mini Factory or programming a Mars robot ‘rover’ at We The Curious.

In maximum classes of 11, learning from a specialist tutor, students cover areas such as the properties of different materials, manufacturing, engineering drawing, static structural systems, electro-mechanical systems, the effect of forces and applications of engineering technology. This academic foundation gives students the grounding to excel in their future study at university and beyond.

Students also participate in practical workshops such as making mini hydraulic bridges and complete group projects such as designing and building battery-powered vehicles. These workshops enable students to test and apply their new knowledge to solve problems, as well as building their teamwork and project management skills.

Each week, students also have the opportunity to be inspired to take on a career in engineering through visits to destinations such as the Mini Factory.

Students also participate in Skills Elective sessions to give them the best opportunity to build a career in engineering with sessions such as interview techniques, a cv workshop and independent learning skills. Weekly projects also aim to improve a student’s English language capability through team-work, public speaking and debate.
